Amazon’s Elastic MapReduce is a data analytics tool that sub-divides data into smaller chunks to simplify the organization and thus recombine the processed data into a final form that is easily extractable. After uploading your data, business users can manage and monitor the job flow progress directly from the AWS Management Console as it is fed into Amazon S3. The Hadoop framework allows its users to run as many concurrent job flows as you desire and offers easy-access tools and a reliable infrastructure environment. Once job flows are completed, the system automatically shuts down your instances so that you only pay for what you use.
Amazon Elastic MapReduce is integrated with other Amazon web services such as Amazon S3, DynamoDB and EC2. With its configurable firewall settings, MapReduce enables its users to isolate job flow access to ensure flexible availability within the IT infrastructure. Amazon Elastic MapReduce is relatively inexpensive in terms of on-demand usage (no long-term commitments or additional costs and complexities of maintaining hardware), reserved (low, one-time payment for the instance that you wish to reserve) and spot instances (allows users to bid on unused Amazon EC2 capacity as long as the bid price stays above the spot price).
The MapReduce infrastructure follows a simple job flow outline: RunJobFlow, DescribeJobFlows (provides status), AddJobFlowSteps (optional additional steps) and TerminateJobFlows.
